How to Brush Your Cat’s Teeth

Me was yawning last night and Mommy said, Yuck! Nellie Belly, your teeth need cleaning!” Mommy then went online to find out what she should do to clean my teeth. She found an article at About. It said:

Time Required: 5 minutes

1. 1.   Assemble supplies: sterile gauze, scissors, cat toothpaste (available at pet stores) or a weak sterile solution recommended by your veterinarian.
2. Wrap a strip of gauze around the index finger of your dominant hand and either dip it in the sterile solution, or apply a small amount of toothpaste to your fingertip.
3. Holding the cat in your lap, open his mouth.
4. Gently rub your ‘finger brush’ in a circular motion on his teeth, concentrating on the area next to the gums. Gently massage the gums at the same time. It’s not necessary to do the back sides of the teeth. Once your cat will tolerate this procedure, you can graduate to a small child’s toothbrush.
5. Give kitty a few loving pats and kind words, along with a little treat to polish off with his shiny clean teeth.

Sounds easy, right? Wrong!!!

Step 1 – Assemble the supplies. That was easy. But Mommy forgot a couple of integral items – Band-Aids, mercurochrome and lots of towels (to staunch the bleeding).

 Step 2 – That was easy too. Mommy wrapped the gauze around her finger and she mixed some tuna juice in with the dogs’ toothpaste.

Step 3 – Hold the cat in your lap and open their mouth. Now we have done this before. Me actually will let you open my mouth, but me does not like it!

Out came the claws and swoosh! Mommy got a big scratch down her arm. That’s when she realized she needed the Band-Aids and the Mercurochrome. She put me down and went and got them, she came back with the box of Band-Aids, the tube of Mercurochrome and sat down. Her arm had a whole bunch of Band-Aids on it. She then re-wrapped her finger, applied the tooth paste to it and picked me up.

With a gigantic MEEEROOW!! Me catapulted over the back of the chair, using Mommy as a launching pad!!! This time Mommy went and got a towel to staunch the bleeding from her shoulder.

Me really thought she would be over the tooth brushing business, but, she enlisted Daddy to help. After chasing me around the house for 15 minutes, me finally let them capture me under the bed. Daddy was laying on the floor on one side and Mommy was on the tight side by the window. Me thought me could scoot past her nose and escape, but Mommy was too smart! She brought the broom! And she brushed me towards Daddy. Daddy grabbed me and he wrapped me in a towel with only my head sticking out, but me did manage to get some good scratches in on his arm. Mommy had to put some Band-Aids on him too!

Daddy held me and Mommy tried to get my mouth open! Me just growled and hissed! When me hissed, Mommy got a finger in my mouth with the gauze and me bit it!!!

Mommy shrieked Daddy loosened just enough for me t squirm out and me used him as a launching pad! Daddy used the towel he had wrapped me in to staunch the bleeding. Me jumped up on top of the electronics stand and hissed at them!!!

Me Laughed

Mommy looked at the mess and skipped right to Step 5!

She threw the treats at me and me did NOT get a loving pat!!

Daddy said something about how it was lucky his tetanus shots were up to date and mommy agreed.
